With the absence of any tools to compare, having visibility into what other developers are doing, let alone collaborating with them, is difficult.

Flosum's comparison solution provides the following capabilities:

  • Compare two different organizations
  • Compare the same organization at different points in time
  • Compare side-by-side declarative as well as programmatic components
  • Compare multiple different components of a given metadata type one after the other

Compare Two Orgs

Part 1: Make changes in the target organization

    1. Login to the target organization
    2. Make a change to the Visualforce page. It could be as simple as adding a quick comment to the page
    3. Now, make a change to the custom object component. It could be as simple as changing the data type of a custom field

Part 2: Retrieve the changes from the target organization

    1. Go to the Flosum organization
    2. Create a snapshot for the target organization as described in Create a snapshot Unit above. Call this snapshot TargetSnapshot

Part 3: Compare two orgs

    1. Login to Flosum (if required)
    2. Click on Snapshot Comparison tab
    3. On the left hand side, select the source Organization. Select Snapshot :1 to be SourceSnapshot
    4. On the right hand side, select the target Organization. Select Snapshot 2: to be TargetSnapshot
    5. Leave the Compare Different checkbox checked. If the checkbox is checked, it will show you only the missing and different components in the table below
    6. Select the Metadata Type: ApexPage
    7. Select and check the View Detail box to the left of the component name and then click on View Detail above to see the side-by-side comparison
    8. Select the Back button
    9. Select the Metadata Type: CustomObject
    10. Select and check the View Detail box to the left of the component name and then click on View Detail above to see the side-by-side comparison

Results:

  • The rows in Yellow show that the component exists in both the snapshots, but the component is different
  • The rows in Red show that the component is missing from one or the other snapshot. The last modified date is empty from the missing snapshot
